I thought acne was for teens?

Published on November 29, 2012, by in Beauty, Life.

Maybe time has altered my memories but I swear that in some grade school health class where changes to our soon to be adolescent bodies were discussed, acne was presented as something that came along with being a teenager. No one mentioned that acne can be for life. Through experience, I now know that acne can be for life as in my 30′s I suffer the worst skin I’ve ever had (I know, poor me). I kind of gave up for a while but now I’m actively working on it and this is a run down of what I think is currently working.

1.) Clarisonic brush

I use this every other day at night when I wash my face. I was using it more than that and I think it made me break out more. My current usage seems just right. I feel like it really helps with fine lines around my eyes. The clarisonic is pricey and I was lucky that a girlfriend was able to pick one up for me at a steep discount.

2. Philosophy Purity Made Simple

This is my favorite face wash. It is VERY gentle. I tend to have oily skin and my husband has super dry skin and we both love this face wash. Takes off face and eye makeup and leaves my face feeling so soft.

3. Moisturizer!!!

I moisturize morning and night and I bounce between Hope in a Jar and Cetaphil. The Hope in a Jar is very light and non-greasy, absorbs quickly and fairly odorless. The Cetaphil is heavier but absorbs well too. I also use the Cetaphil on my super sensitive legs after I shave.

4. Exfoliate

This has been making a HUGE difference for me. I do it twice a week and I have seen such a huge improvement. My red spots are disappearing and I haven’t had any new eruptions.

5. Toner

I’m a little on the fence about this one. I have never used toner before but read about its function and thought it was worth trying. I’ve been using it at night when I don’t exfoliate. It does seem to even me out and keep my problematic chin dry but I need to use a lot of moisturizer with it.

What do you love to use? Any recommendations?

Christmas Crafts: Pinecone Garland

Published on November 25, 2012, by in DIY, Home.

I saw a pinecone garland on a magazine cover somewhere and I can’t even remember where. The point is, when I saw it I knew it was what I needed for my new fireplace mantle.  After pricing them and realizing they are literally just pine cones attached to a string I decided that my husband would think I was an idiot if I paid for something that actually grows on trees just outside our house- so I decided to just tackle the project myself (with my Mom)- DIY style.

Neiman Marcus Pinecone Garland: $65!?!?

This whole project was very “figure it out as we go.” We went into the yard to collect pinecones and got a variety of sizes. Then we took a piece of ribbon (we used 1/4 inch white cotton ribbon, though I would recommend something darker) and strung it from one side of the mantle to the other, making it the length I wanted. Then my mom and I affixed about 6 inches of 1/4 lb green florist wire to each pinecone, somewhere in the bottom 1/3 of the cone. We just wrapped the wire around a twisted it once or twice. Then I just started in the middle and one-by-one I twisted the pinecones on the ribbon- first I was meticulously alternating the direction the pinecones faced in the hopes of some organization (my crafting usually begins this way), but that method was soon abandoned in favor of a more haphazard technique.

So this process went on for a while until we had built and nice looking garland. The advantage to using the wire instead of string was that if I stood back and something wasn’t in the right place I could just twist it to where I wanted it to be. At first the garland wasn’t looking at heavy as I wanted it to, so with the wire I was just able to slide the pinecones around until they were nice and tight and round.

This was a fun way to spend an afternoon drinking coffee with my mom. I wouldn’t call it “quick” but it was certainly easy, cheap, and rewarding.

Fall Eats: Creamy Chicken Coconut Soup

Published on November 19, 2012, by in Uncategorized.
With cold weather comes time for soup. It also comes time where I’d rather be obsessively online shopping for the perfect gift than standing in my kitchen. On a hunt for quick and easy low-ish carb, ”real food” (as in- nothing processed, no mixes, or noodles, or- basically my ingredients shouldn’t really have ingredients) crock pot recipe I stumbled across this and decided to give it a try.
I must have had a bad experience somewhere with coconut in savory dishes because I definitely have been holding a grudge. That said I’m really glad I decided to give coconut another chance because this soup is soup-er easy, soup-er healthy, soup-er delicious, and soup-er filling. Here is the run down.

Here is whatcha need.

You need:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
14 oz diced tomatoes and juice
14 oz coconut milk (I found it in the mexican foods section, near the beans, after some wandering.)
1 clove of garlic
2 Tbsp Italian seasoning
1 Tbsp Basil
1 c. Chicken Broth
Directions: Dump everything into crock. Cook on high for 5-6 hours or low for 8-9. Shred chicken with forks (it’s really easy to do this, the chicken is ready to fall apart). Eat.

Before Cooking

After Cooking

I would make this soup again in a heartbeat. You barely notice the coconut, except that is makes the whole thing taste richer. I don’t have the numbers for you, but this recipe has to be cheap. It makes about 6 reasonable servings or 4 “I’M SO HUNGRY” servings. Bon appetit!

Shine On

Published on November 17, 2012, by in Fashion, Life.

With T-day just a few days away I’m beyond excited for this holiday season. Normally I dread Christmas and its commercialism which even offends a consumer such as myself. However, our Little Man has warded the Grinchiness away and I am excited to share Christmas lights and holiday meals with him. In my excitement for the holidays this year I am committing myself to wearing something sparkly everyday from Turkey Day to New Year’s. I’ll be honest, I may not be able to wait until Thanksgiving to bust out the extra sparkle- I may have to start celebrating Tom Turkey right now! I have a plethora of super sparkly already in my closet but I couldn’t resist picking up these shoes from Target-

Sparkle!

I’m on the look out for a pair of glittery heels that are relatively comfortable so let me know if you come across something.

Giving Thanks

Published on November 1, 2012, by in Life.

I was feeling put out about Hurricane Sandy because amongst local friends I was the only one to lose power. I fell behind without heat, power, and internet. We went without for about twenty-four hours. As I type this I feel guilty because my Dad just emailed my sister and I to let us know that he and my Mom are okay in North Jersey. My Dad mentioned that cell coverage is really hard to find right now and that food is running low at home and in grocery stores. He also included this picture of what used to be Monmouth Beach Club.

Our lives didn’t really skip a beat down here so I’m writing today to remind myself to think of other people who are having a very tough time right now.

Storm prep!

Published on October 29, 2012, by in Uncategorized.

So, I have this new house. On the plus side it has a water view! On the minus side, that means when something like “Frankenstorm” comes along we are pretty much screwed.

How screwed are we? Well- our neighbors have left us notes (below) to try to warn us and the fire department stop by today and told us that our house was on their select list of houses to warn about certain flood risk. But we aren’t taking this lying down, OH NO! My husband and I have spent today battening down our hatches, preparing for the… well we have no idea what we are preparing for other than a rough couple of days!

From our very friendly neighbor.

Step one of our storm prep was getting a generator. We at least had the foresight to secure one of these puppies several days ago. We have suffered through several periods without power recently (before we moved) so the generator was pretty high on our list of *needs*. We have laid out extension cords so that once the power is out hooking everything important up will be fairly easy. Here’s hoping it doesn’t stay out long.

our savior

Step two involved sandbagging our basement entry way and removing anything we care about at all down there. It will be interesting to see what this storm does to our house. We know there may be flood issues, but we are hoping for the best. It will be a learning experience, whatever happens!

Step three of storm prep was doing every piece of dirty laundry and dish in our house. That stuff will build up when the power is out, so may as well start off the event ahead of the game.

So those were our major prep steps- did I miss anything you guys make sure to do?

Franken- what???

Published on October 27, 2012, by in Life.

My kid has been home sick this week so I feel like I’m emerging from a hole. We don’t watch tv when he is around and I hadn’t been on the Internet much… so yesterday the antibiotics were kicking in and he met conditions to go to school- I finally had the opportunity to rejoin the world. That’s when I heard about Frankenstorm. Seriously? I want you all to know that I think that for those of us not directly on the water, I don’t think this will be a big deal. Further, I’d like to threaten Frankenstorm. Frankenstorm my life doesn’t afford a storm that knocks out the power for a week. You can’t happen. Additionally, you will ruin Halloween which is one of my favorite holidays. Vote no to Frankenstorm.

Cloud Atlas

Published on October 25, 2012, by in Movies, Reviews.

I was lucky enough to score some sneak preview passes for the latest Tom Hanks blockbuster, Cloud Atlas; my Maryland Film Festival membership is paying off once again. I arrived at the theater with my lucky “plus guest” and although the theater was already packed we got pretty decent seats down near the front. Actually, the Harbor East Landmark Theatre where the screening was being held is a pretty great place and I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad seat. Leather seats and a full bar, that’s what I call a movie theater! I came into this movie not knowing a thing about the story except the vague bit I garnered from the one trailer I had seen. I gathered from all the chatter I heard around me that it is based on a book that, judging from that crowd, had some diehard fans. All I knew was Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. I mean, I didn’t really need to know more.

I’m really not sure how to describe this movie. Sci fi/fantasy to start with. The story followed six different paths all occurring at six different points of time. I appreciated how the viewer was allowed to slowly begin to understand what was going on and the subtle way the plot line developed. I don’t want to say a lot about the story and accidentally give something away. The stories were interconnected and the characters in each path were related to  the characters in the other paths. Sort of like a giant web of consciousness and consequences across hundreds or perhaps even thousands of years.

Because of this interconnectedness, each actor played several roles, sometimes unrecognizably so. While this was great and the costuming, make-up, and effects were amazing, I did find myself getting a bit distracted at times. Instead of paying attention to the story I was trying to figure out just who that actor was… During the closing credits all is revealed and there were many surprised noises from the crowd when they realized who some of the roles were played by. I was definitely fooled by some. Some of the heavily altered characters just seemed a bit off though. LIke when Monica is in the fat suit in Friends. You get it, but you don’t really buy it.

This movie is long. Nearly three hours or 164 minutes to be precise. It speaks volumes of how engrossing the story was that I did not even really notice the length until the various story lines were being wrapped up. Across six paths, this took a while and I started getting restless. Looking back, I can’t see a lot of filler or fluff that took up the time; pure story all the way. And this is coming from a woman who cannot stand endless car chases or shootouts or explosions or whatever else makes up 70% of most action movies. Not that this is an action movie, although there are some chase scenes and the like. It’s not a tearjerker either although there are some sad/tender moments. It’s a rare movie that combines big names with complex plots and subtle themes vs. hit-you-over-the-head morality (I’m looking at you, Avatar). There are also some genuinely funny parts where I even laughed out loud. (Or lol’d for those of you under 30.)

All in all, I’d say go see it. It’s not the best movie I’ve ever seen but the unusual story and great acting made it an enjoyable and thought provoking experience. I left the theater thinking to myself that I must read the book so I could clear up some of my lingering questions. On a Tom Hanks scale I’d say it’s better than a Forrest Gump but not on the level of a Saving Private Ryan. If you end up going to see it, let me know what you think.
